Reems Creek Nursery, Inc. got its start as a front yard business consisting of a greenhouse, a couple of trucks, a lawnmower, and trailer. But that wasn't ever the big picture for Bill and Wilma Penland, owners of Reems Creek Nursery.
In 1967, the Penlands built a home in Weaverville. When Wilma Penland began landscaping their new yard, her interest in plants was sparked. Bill Penland was working as an engineer at Square-D, and Wilma was home raising their two children. In the meantime they sold their house in Weaverville and moved back to Wilma's family farm in the Reems Creek Valley of northern Buncombe County. By the mid-seventies, the Penlands started brainstorming about possible alternatives to Bill spending the rest of his life at Square-D. Together they formulated a plan for a greenhouse & landscape maintenance business. One business license later... Reems Creek Nursery was officially underway! Their families thought they had lost their minds.
While Wilma worked on her Horticultural degree at Haywood Community College, Bill continued at Square-D. They bought a used tomato greenhouse in Canton, dismantled it, and reassembled it in their front yard in the Beech community. The Penlands started growing bedding plants and buying shrubbery to resell. In 1980 Wilma completed her horticultural degree. By then they were selling enough plants and doing enough grounds maintenance for Bill to quit his regular job. Their children, Susan and David were old enough to help too.
In 1985 Reems Creek Valley Nursery moved to its present location at 70 Monticello Road. You know...location, location, location! Three brand new greenhouse bays were installed and business at the new location ensued. Of course over the years things have evolved and changed. What is now the outdoor covered shopping area was once a parking lot. The building that initially housed our offices was torn down and our beautiful pond/waterfall garden was installed. One employee, Gerri Neville, has been working for the nursery since before the move. Along with Wilma, she is our walking plant-encyclopedia and propagates many of the annuals, perennials, and amazing vegetable selection.
The Penland children, Susan and David, both studied horticulture at NC State. David remembers pushing a lawn mower in the 5th grade. Now he is manager of the Landscape Department and has served in many other capacities throughout the years. Susan has also been involved in many aspects of the business including management, but she especially enjoys the propagation end of the nursery at our farm location. David Penland and Susan Penland Reavis are both married and raising their own children on the family farm up Reems Creek Road. Bill and Wilma hope for a third generation of plant-lovers involved in the nursery business.
